WISCAR REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO ENDING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS AS 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM BEGIN

Today, WISCAR joins the global community in commemorating the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls. This year’s theme; “Towards 30 Years of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action: UNiTE to End Violence Against Women,” underscores our unwavering commitment to ending all forms of violence and discrimination against women and girls. This day also marks the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, from November 25th to December 10th, culminating in Human Rights Day.

WISCAR remains steadfast in its efforts to build a society where every woman and girl lives free from fear, abuse, and discrimination. We recognize that this vision requires action beyond rhetoric and are deeply committed to initiatives that drive meaningful change. As a private sector liaison to UN Women on Gender-Responsive Procurement (GRP) and through our advocacy for the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs), WISCAR champions the principles designed to promote gender equality and empowerment in workplaces, marketplaces, and communities. The WEPs provide a holistic framework for private sector organizations to foster environments that respect human rights, promote non-discrimination, and ensure all employees’ health, safety, and well-being.

Key WEPs principles include:

  • Treating all women and men fairly at work by respecting and supporting human rights and non-discrimination.
  • Promoting women to strategic leadership positions and addressing issues such as the gender pay gap.
  • Creating workplaces free from sexual harassment and violence to ensure the safety and well-being of all workers.

We are also delighted to serve as a member of the High-Level Steering Committee on the Private Sector-Led GBV Fund, a collaborative effort of the UN Women, government agencies, NGOs, and businesses to combat gender-based violence. The collaborative steps being taken to establish the GBV Fund is a testament to Nigeria’s dedication to achieving global commitments such as SDG Goal 5 on Gender Equality. We call on the private sector to support this initiative and join us in creating violence-free workplaces, marketplaces, and communities.

As part of our 16 Days of Activism activities, WISCAR invites the public to participate in our Mentoring Walk on Thursday, November 30, 2024, at Banana Island, Lagos. The walk will amplify our collective voice to end all forms of violence against women and girls in Lagos, across Nigeria, and beyond.

We acknowledge the significant progress made but understand that the journey to a just and equitable society is far from over. As we commemorate this important day, we call on individuals, private sector organizations, and government bodies to unite with us in building a society where every woman and girl lives with dignity, respect, and the freedom they deserve.

Together, let us break the silence, support survivors, and challenge harmful beliefs and practices that perpetuate violence. The time to act is now. Join us as we #UNiTE to end violence against women and girls.
