Note from the Founder
The vision for Women in Successful Careers (WISCAR) emerged in 2008 as a response to systemic barriers facing professional women in Nigeria. Conceived by Amina Oyagbola during her Africa Leadership Initiative West Africa (ALIWA) Fellowship, WISCAR was established to provide mentorship, guidance, and empowerment for women navigating professional challenges. Oyagbola, with over two decades of leadership experience, recognized the unique biases and limitations women face in the workplace, particularly in a patriarchal society. WISCAR sought to address these disparities by fostering an ecosystem of mentorship that nurtures professional growth and leadership development for women.
Since its inception, WISCAR has implemented transformative programs such as the WIN with WISCAR Mentoring Programme, which has directly impacted over 1,000 women across various industries. Additionally, initiatives like the Grow and Learn Initiative (GLIN) focus on mentoring schoolgirls aged 13–18, influencing over 2,500 students and driving conversations on gender equality from a young age. The organization has emphasized Sustainable Development Goal 5—gender equality—through strategic partnerships, leadership conferences, and community outreach.
WISCAR’s mentoring framework has been pivotal in shaping professional trajectories. By addressing societal norms, workplace biases, and talent development gaps, the organization has empowered women to progress into leadership roles. Alumni have transitioned into mentors, amplifying the ripple effect of WISCAR’s impact. The organization has also extended its influence globally, cultivating partnerships that bolster female talent development in the public and private sectors.
Reflecting on the journey, Oyagbola highlights both successes and challenges, including funding hurdles and the necessity of male allies to sustain momentum. However, the achievements—such as fostering gender balance, boosting organizational growth, and contributing to GDP development—underscore the strategic importance of mentorship. Oyagbola envisions WISCAR scaling its efforts across Africa and beyond, advocating for gender parity and societal transformation.
As WISCAR enters its 16th year, the Founder reiterates her gratitude to stakeholders, including mentors, sponsors, volunteers, and staff, who have contributed to the organization’s mission. With a focus on collaboration and innovative impact, WISCAR continues to inspire and empower women to build successful careers and drive national development.
